For most of the last year, a resident heading south on the Paint Creek Trail had to stop short of Rochester, walk around Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve, and pick the trail back up at a Woodward Avenue crosswalk. A wooden railroad trestle from the 1920s, Bridge 31.7 north of Ludlow Avenue, was too far gone to keep. The detour became the summer of 2025 and stretched deep into 2026.
That changes this season. With the new steel truss now decked and railed, the 8.9 miles of crushed limestone from Rochester to Lake Orion read as one continuous line again, and the reopening lands in the same summer that a new gastropub finally filled the long-vacant north end of Country Creek Commons. If you live here, the practical geography of your July is a little different than it was last July, and it is worth mapping.
The bridge that quietly rewrote the summer
The old crossing at mile marker 31.7 was a load-restricted timber structure, roughly a century old, with piers in the water that trapped debris every spring. Its replacement is a single-span prefabricated steel truss, about 14 feet wide by 70 feet long, wide enough now for emergency and maintenance vehicles and built to ADA standards. The total price of the project came in around $1.4 million, funded largely by grants shepherded by the City of Rochester and the Paint Creek Trailways Commission.
Construction hit its milestones through the spring. Decking finished in early April, handrail installation followed, and stair installation and trail restoration were the last items before reopening. The bridge is a bigger deal ecologically than it looks. Paint Creek is a designated cold-water stream, and Paint Creek Trail manager Ingrid Kliffel noted in project documents that the DNR recognizes the creek as a high-quality cold-water stream with a brown trout population, and replacing 31.7 with a clear-span bridge eliminates the logjams that had been forming and improves fish passage and sediment flow.
A load-restricted timber bridge with piers in the water was the single biggest bottleneck on the trail. Removing it changes both the ride and the creek underneath it.
The practical effect for a resident: you can ride south from Silver Bell Road, cross Dutton, and roll into downtown Rochester without a detour for the first time in more than a year. The northern half of the trail through Oakland Township, which never closed, now feeds back into a working through-route.
A new anchor at 4822 Adams
The other change to Oakland Township's summer sits about a mile east of the trail. Adams Social opened at 4822 N Adams Road inside Country Creek Commons, in the plaza that already held Lino's North, The Oakland Kitchen + Bar, Hungry Howie's, and the Kroger. Owner Curtiss Pagels, whose previous work was at Madhouse Bar & Grill in Madison Heights, built it as an upscale gastropub with a large central bar. The menu leans burgers, steaks, and shareable entrees, and the kitchen runs a dedicated fryer for gluten-free orders, which is unusual for a room this new.
Hours are worth knowing before you plan a ride: the restaurant runs 11 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday and Sunday, and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. In practice this means a late lap on the trail followed by a bar seat is now possible on a Tuesday night without driving into Rochester or over to Lakeville. That single plaza, anchored by Adams Social, The Oakland Kitchen + Bar, and Lino's North, is starting to function as the township's de facto downtown, which is a strange thing to say about a community that has famously resisted having one.
Wednesdays at Bear Creek, Thursdays at Lost Lake
The Parks & Rec calendar runs out of the second floor of the Paint Creek Cider Mill at 4480 Orion Road, the same historic building that houses the Trailways Commission, the Historic District Commission, and Six Rivers Land Conservancy. Programming this summer clusters around three parks, and the pattern is more useful than any single event.

Two things stand out when you read this list against the trail map. The Wednesday morning sequence at Bear Creek runs Toddler Tunes at 9:30, Tunes and Tales at 10:20, and Drums in the Sun at 11:10, which means a family with two kids at different ages can stack a full morning in one park. And the ZenBeatz Glow Party on the trail itself, once in June and once in August, uses the reopened corridor as programming space rather than just infrastructure.
Registration for residents opened earlier this spring, and non-resident registration opened May 1, 2026, either online or in person at the Cider Mill from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
The prairie almost nobody talks about
Between Bridge 31.7 and Adams Social, the trail passes something most residents walk right past. The Paint Creek Heritage Area sits on the west side of the trail just north of Silver Bell Road. Ten acres, acquired by land preservation millage funds in 2003, and by the township's own description a globally rare wet-mesic prairie remnant, southern wet meadow, mesic oak savanna, and the original bed of Paint Creek and its floodplain.
The point of naming it here is not botanical. It is that Oakland Township is almost entirely built on land that used to be prairie or oak savanna, and this ten-acre parcel is one of the last visible pieces of what that looked like. The natural areas stewardship team uses prescribed fire, invasive shrub control, and native seed collecting to hold the site open. Summer is when the sun-loving species do their work. If you ride the trail between the parking lots at Silver Bell and Gallagher, slow down for the west shoulder.
The through-line, and what to hold for September
You can string the whole summer together on a single Saturday. Ride south from Silver Bell, past the Heritage Area, over the new 31.7 crossing into Rochester Municipal Park. Ride back. Detour east on Adams for a late lunch at Adams Social. That was not a routine anyone in Oakland Township could actually run in July 2025.
There are two dates worth writing on the fall side of the calendar. Goodison Good Time, the free annual September festival at Bear Creek Nature Park, brings live music, games, crafts, and bounce houses, and it is the softest handoff Oakland Township makes between summer programming and fall. And for the trail-focused, the same corridor connects north to the Polly Ann Trail via the Amber's Heart Connector just north of Clarkston and Kern Roads, part of what makes the Paint Creek section a functional piece of Michigan's Iron Belle Trail, two routes that cross over 2,000 miles and both peninsulas.
The story of summer 2026 in Oakland Township is not any single opening. It is that the spine works again. A new steel bridge, a new gastropub at the north end of Adams Road, and a Parks & Rec calendar that treats the trail as programming space rather than just a linear park, all in one season.
